The omega-3 fatty acid called docosahexaenoic acid helps increase levels of a particular protein that is found at lower levels in Alzheimer’s patients.

So how do you get this particular omega-3 fatty acid? DHA, as it is also called, is an essential fatty acid that the body cannot produce on it’s own. DHA is the most prevalent essential fatty acid in the brain but your body must get the acid from outside sources like your diet or fish oil supplements.

Vegans and vegetarians have been shown to have reduced levels of DHA and should consider supplementing their diet with DHA.

Check the International Fish Oil Standards site for more information about reputable fish oil supplements.
